Kansamardani Temple (Srinagar)

There is a famous story of Kansmardhani. When Lord Krishana was born at same time Yogmaya was born in house of Nanda and Yashoda. By the divine help Vasudev , father of Lord Krishana interchanged Krishana and Yogmaya from Brij to Mathura jail where Vasudev and Devakee were kept by the Kansa as prisoners.
It was forcasted that Kansa the brother of Devakee will be killed by the eighth child born to devakee. Kansa tried to kill Yogmaya by throwing her body on a large stone but her body fragmented into two halfs. The first one was fell in Vindyanchaland and the second one in Srinagar (Pouri Garwal Uttarakhand). That time Yogmaya predicted for the death of Kansa. So Yogmaya became famous as Kansmardhani in Srinagar garhwal.
After many centuries a farmer was ploughing his field at same place where the second half of Yogmaya fell. That time he heard a sound beneath the earth that” I am a nude girl, please cover me if you a

kansamardani temple

re having anything to cover.” That time the farmer was having only a bronze bowl (called patha in Garwali) So he covered her by that bowl. He made a small temple (Manduli) there. That bronze bowl is still there in temple’s Garbha Grah. When Gorkhas attacked on Srinagar the capital of Garwal in 1937 they determined in Kansmardhani that if they will win the capital, they will make a temple there. After winning Garhwal they made the temple for there happiness and self defense. Triyodashio of Sravan Maha Krishna Paksha , Every Saturday and Durga Asthami are the most common days when special pooja is organised.
