Festival of UttaraKhand
Festivals are the mirrors of the culture and society. Some place are identifies by theirs fairs and festivals. Uttarakhand has also its fairs and festival which shows its culture. These festivals and fairs gives breathe to folks songs and dances of Uttaranchal and are alive because of these. Mainly, the purpose of these fairs and festivals are to remember the Devtas (God) and make a get together with their relatives.
Main festivals of Uttarakhand
Makar Sankranti (MAKRANI)
It is also known as khichdi sankranti. It is symbol of change the season. According to the Hindu mythology the sun enter the zodiacal sign of ‘Makar’ and sun starts moving to north. On Makar sankranti people give khichadi (mixture of pulses and rice) in charity and eats also khichdi in meal.
Janma Asthmi
It is also known as Vrat in Garwhal region because it is believed the day of fast on the occasion of birthday of Lord Krishna. This festival is celebrated in the month of August on asthami by the hindu calendar. Folks do fast for the whole day and have meal in the evening after Pooja. People invite their married daughters on this occasion.
Diwali (BAGWAL)
Diwali is celebrated in the month of Kartik as hindu calendar. On Diwali morning people make different dishes and pray cow and put flower garland on her. In the evening people light their home by diya(lamp) and gather in a place and burn small sticks tied by rope and dance. Women folks do cultural dance Jhumela.
Basant Panchami (PANCHAMI)
Basant pancham is known as a holy day and symbols of starting spring season in the month of Jan-Feb. It is also known a day to do some special thing. Native usually pierce the nose and ears of small girls. Goddess Sarswati is worship in this day as the god of knowledge; school children worship books and small kid start going to school on this day.
Pheoli Phool de
This festival is celebrated in the month of Chaitra by the Hindu calendar. Children of the village collect the Pheoli(seasonal yellow flower) with other flower and put these flowers door to door and bless for prosperity and in return people gives them money Jaggery, cereals and sweets.
